You’ve probably said it, quoted verses—maybe even sung about it, usually with your mind on finances, right? But God’s provision doesn’t always show up in the form of dollars; He’s got lots of different ways of caring for us.
Take Abraham, for example. In the anguished moment when he prepared to sacrifice his son Isaac, God provided a ram. And that’s the origin of this name of God, “Jehovah Jireh,” “The Lord provides”: it’s what Abraham called the mountain where God intervened with His provision of a ram.
But here’s the thing: the Hebrew word for “provide” here actually means “to see.” In fact, of the more than 1,200 times this word is used in the Bible, this is the only place where it’s translated “provide.”
Did you catch that? God’s seeing is inextricably woven together with His provision. God is actively observing what is happening in our world and our lives. And He doesn’t stop with observation: His provision can take so many forms: wisdom, encouragement, information, refreshment, creativity, advocacy, direction, rams, and yes, finances!
So we can say with confidence, “God will provide; The LORD will see to it.”
