Heartland’s Disaffiliation from ACNA

In 2018 Heartland Church began an official affiliation with the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA).  We found a home with a beautiful family within ACNA in the Anglican Diocese of the Great Lakes (ADGL).

About two years ago, ADGL leadership made us aware of some required changes that would affect us as a Church. We realized that those changes would impact the day-to-day governance of the church, while others would impact Sunday morning services. When the ADGL started asking us to change, Heartland’s leadership team began serious discussion and prayer about what the changes would require. Would we be able to be in alignment with the required changes and retain our DNA (healing, worship, everyone gets to play) and values? Would we be able to respond to God’s call and lead our body into fruitful blessings that follow obedience?

After much prayer and deliberation, the leadership team concluded that we cannot stay in the Anglican Church and be true to our DNA. With this conclusion, we are not saying that there is anything wrong with the Anglican Church. It is filled with beauty and love. It is filled with genuine worship and adoration of God. We can also say that we love the people who make up the Anglican Church. However, when we looked at the governance and practices of the Anglican Church, we realized that we could not align with their governance and practices  without changing our vision, values, and practices.

After many conversations with Bishop Mark, and with his blessing, it is our intention as the leadership of Heartland Church to officially disaffiliate with the Anglican Church on May 31, 2025.

As a Church we value accountability. We have changed our internal governing structure to provide more accountability for Pastor Liam and the board. We are also seeking  intentional external apostolic oversight to bring additional healthy checks and balances. As a body of believers, we will not immediately align with any other denomination. However, our goal is to continue to seek God, asking for revelation about an appropriate alignment for Heartland Church.

We look forward to what God is going to do through Heartland Church both now and in the future. We know we have our assignment and we are seeking our alignment. We want to thank Bishop Mark and the ADGL for the ways they have loved us and participated in our transformational journey. We ask God to bless them as they continue to do Kingdom work.
